Dog that survived roof toss becomes cause celebre

NEW YORK — Animal welfare activists and pet lovers are demanding that a dog that survived being thrown off a six-story New York building this summer be allowed to live.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it will euthanize the pit bull mix named Oreo on Friday. The agency says she is unpredictably aggressive.

The ASPCA has been inundated with calls, Twitter messages and e-mails demanding her life be spared.

Volunteer dog rescuer Emily Danks says she was escorted out when she went to the ASPCA building to try to save Oreo. Danks says “all dogs can be worked with.”

Authorities say Oreo suffered two broken legs when she was thrown off a roof in June. A 19-year-old Brooklyn man has pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals.
